In the so-called western nations there is a cluster of patient`s suffering from large bowel diverticula, mainly due to the diet which is mostly low in fibre. This together with a weakness of the connective tissue, can lead to chronic constipation with age. An increase in pressure in the bowel and a bulging of the tissue through the musculature can be the result.
Prevalence
The increase is dependant on age. Approximately 20% of the population between 40 and 60 are diagnosed. This increases to 40% in those over 70.
Localization
The most common localization is the colon sigmoidum, an s-shaped part of the bowel in the lower left abdomen, about 15-20 cm away from the anus. Diverticula can develop in other bowel segments as well.
