Diverticula are bulging pouches of the mucous membrane of the large bowel outwards caused by a weakness of the musculature of the bowel, acquired over a longer period of time. This ailment is known as diverticulitis. It is a benign illness, prevalent in countries with a high standard of living.

Diverticula are bulging pouches of the mucuous membrane of the large bowel caused by a naturally acquired weakness of the large bowel itself. The diverticula are surrounded by a very thin mucous membrane, making an inflammation or perforation (bursting) probable.
Diverticulosis
This describes a common, symptom-free yet potentially dangerous condition mostly affecting the ileum (colon sigmoidum), but possibly also other parts of the large bowel. It is a benign condition.

Diverticulitis
In 10% of all cases the diverticula can become inflamed. This is called diverticulitis. Under certain conditions the inflammation can be life-threatening.
